Mauritius Telecom has been connected to the SAFE/SAT-3/WASC submarine fibre-optic cable since 2002. The system provides a highperformance link between Europe and South Africa and a number of countries on the West African coastline, continuing to Reunion, Mauritius and Malaysia, with a further link to India.
In 2010, the LION (Lower Indian Ocean Network) cable, linking Mauritius, Reunion and Madagascar, will become operational. A second phase will extend the LION cable to the east coast of Africa; implementation starting in 2011.
Mauritius Telecom is a member of the EASSy Cable System linking the east coast of Africa to Djibouti. Connection with LION cable in Kenya will provide onward connectivity to Europe and Asia.
Mauritius Telecom has also invested in the EIG (Europe-India Gateway) cable project that will link India to the UK via the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, the link to be established in 2010/2011.
